Throw It

OVERVIEW

Throw It is a public interactive wall designed to target underage drinkers in open and unsupervised areas such as parks, to induce them to take back their bottles and promote the dangers of drinking through gamification.

The project was inspired by a social event in York.

Social Activity

Name: GSA Good Deed Days

Date: Thursday 31st March 2022

Location: Grange Lane play area and Westfield Marsh

Activity Content: Litter Pick with York Council

Graduate Students' Association (GSA)

The GSA is the primary representative body for the University of York postgraduate students. Their annually elected Officers ensure that postgraduates are represented within the University community.

Alongside this, they provide academic advice and support, welfare services, free social and competitive sport, and a range of events and trips.

Question

In participating in this volunteer activity, I found that there were far more bottles and beer cans than any other category of waste.

Why wine bottles and beer cans are the most abundant of all litter?

Research

Interview

Out of consideration for this issue, I interviewed five randomly selected citizens in the vicinity of the park and learned that underage drinking is not allowed under the law, so if minors want to have a drinking party, they will choose unsupervised locations such as parks, beaches and car parks.

Law and Policy

Underage drinking is when a person who is not of legal age drinks alcohol.

In the UK it is illegal for someone under the age of 18 years to buy alcohol, to drink alcohol in a public place, attempt to buy alcohol or be sold alcohol.

Young people aged 16–17 years can drink beer, wine or cider with a meal if it is bought by an adult and they are accompanied by an adult, but it is illegal to drink spirits (Inside Government, Ministry of Justice, 2013).

Phenomenon

How might we use design and technology to raise awareness of the damage caused by alcohol consumption to the organs of minors' bodies, thus reducing the amount of bottle litter in the park.

Tree-Project in MIT Media Lab

Tree is a virtual experience that transforms you into a rainforest tree. With arms as branches and body as the trunk, the users experience the tree’s growth from a seedling into its most complete form and witness its fate firsthand. Collaborating with director Milica Zec and Winslow Porter, they designed and constructed the entire tactile experience throughout the film. With precisely controlled physical elements, including vibration, heat, fan and body haptics, the team created a fully immersive virtual reality storytelling, where the audience no longer watches but is transformed into a new identity, a giant tree in the Peruvian rainforest.
